Anyone else get hives from the cold?

Her paediatrician is hoping she will grow out of it one day but in the mean time im having to find some very creative ways to keep clothes on a toddler

Anyone else get hives from the cold?
We have been tracking our daughters hives since she was 4 months old (she is 2.5 years now) and she only gets them if she’s cold or been in cold temperatures (ie during winter, cool breeze, hopped out of the bath and in the cool air, sitting on the cold ground etc)
She seems to handle them ok (it’s worse when her hands puff up as she struggles to use them properly, but otherwise she copes well) but curious if anyone else finds the cold a trigger?
Her paediatrician is hoping she will grow out of it one day but in the mean time im having to find some very creative ways to keep clothes on a toddler haha+

This happens to me

Cold does not help mine and actually makes mine worse. I struggle more in the winter months with hives. I hope she out grows it because I know how difficult it is. Beautiful little girl you have!

Ellana Jo Gossett thank you, she is a wild one but we wouldn’t have it any other way haha

Erin Semark how cute!! Same with us. I have an older boy and then a littler girl.

Yes! I stopped having them once I became sick with Ulcerative Colitis though. It was extreme temps for me..your precious baby is really sensitive to the cold!

Erin Semark
De’Errika Webster Scott she is super sensitive! It’s been amazing all summer and we thought it had gone for good but now the cooler weather has set in she is already getting flareups. Such a shame. Thankfully the warm weather doesn’t affect her but it’s only the start of the cold weather so poor thing is going to have a long winter. We practically live outside so it’s hard trying to keep her warm and covered all the time, I can see how it frustrates her. But hopefully now she understands a bit more she’ll be more accepting. Glad to hear she isn’t alone

Yes. About 5 years ago it started for me. Cold urticaria it is. Poor darling

Erin Semark
Shannon Baxter crazy! I always thought heat made hives worse so I’m glad she isn’t alone. Such an odd thing to react to. I hope you manage yours ok x

Shannon Platten
Erin Semark it’s crazy isn’t it. I didn’t realise it was a thing until I got it. Winter is awful for me, I get covered in hives. The only time I didn’t get any was 2017 when I was pregnant. The pregnancy hormones must have stopped it somehow.. there’s a few groups around specifically for cold urticaria as well if you ever need some info x

Erin Semark
Oh thanks I’ll definitely look into it. I just don’t want her suffering if I can help it, poor little poppet. Antihistamines don’t seem to work that well but keeping her warm does help but that’s nearly impossible to do 24/7 lol
How interesting about the pregnancy hormones!

Yep and cold induced anaphylaxis, super embarrassing especially on holiday getting out of the pool 🙈🙈 mine came and went while I was little, apparently once I warmed up they disappeared again so they were just careful with drafts and used a fan heater for getting in and out of the bath, also found if they put me near water I always reacted which is aquagenic. My son is pretty much the same. Went for years with nothing really, just itchy hands on cold days unless I got really cold then 10 years ago made a huge come back and brought lots of other triggers with it!
Fingers and toes crossed it packs up and leaves your kidlet soon!

Erin Semark
Lynsey Gilmore oh wow that’s crazy! Hers go away once she is warmer too. She has just started saying “my spots hurt” or “hands hurt” when she gets flare ups so I feel awful for her. I hope you and your son are ok!

Lynsey Gilmore
Erin Semark we’re fine, thank you, I’ve had bits of allergies and eczema and things forever so think it bothers me less than it seems to bother other people because I don’t really know what it is not to have it, I imagine your kidlet will be the same. We actually got what we are pretty certain was covid back in march, since then (fingers and toes crossed it continues!!) I’ve not had any hives at all since which is definately the longest in 10 years so I’m cautiously hopeful!! My son had a shower the other day and I noticed no hives at all either. Funny though because since we had the bug my hubby has been really itchy with a rash!! His doctor says he thinks its post covid rash but he suddenley has so much sympathy for us!!

Erin Semark
Oh wow amazing! Well I’ll secretly cross my fingers for you too 😉🤞
Willow is becoming much more aware now and will tell us when she has “spots” and seems to be understanding why we are putting gloves/socks etc on her all the time so hopefully it all becomes second nature to her soon too. You’re right she doesn’t know life any other way atm so that will help in a roundabout way.
Good luck for you!!!

Yes. If I sit on cold things I get them on my bum. My hands swell when I push pushchair and it’s cold. And my feet when they get cold.

Bernie Hickey
my little girl gets them in hot n cold weather, hot n cold water physical activity’s like running and stress getting upset flares hers i was told she’d grow out of it she’s 7 now had them since been few month old her feet hands knees elbows she says are burning constant x

Erin Semark
Bernie Hickey bummer that’s not ideal is it! Poor little thing. They can get horrendous sometimes can’t they, these were from last winter so I’m hoping they aren’t as bad this winter but time will tell I suppose!

Bernie Hickey
Erin Semark it’s so unfair on them isn’t it night times are worse for us as she as this silly cough allergy related so she wakes herself up coughing n choking then cry’s then flares up then starts itching so it’s a continuous circle she’s been put on adult meds now as once meds in her system they work at first but then that’s it poor babies x

Megan Brown
Bernie Hickey so sorry. I don’t think ours are cold related we live in South Carolina and it’s humid and HOTT. My daughter is 18months and just started having break out over 2 weeks ago

Bernie Hickey
Megan Brown i’m in uk we get them all year hot n cold weather

Mel Collins
Does she have any other symptoms apart from the hives?

Erin Semark
Mel Collins no just a bit more grumpy. Last winter we noticed her hands and feet sometimes went a little purple/blotchy but lately they are just swelling and going red, plus hives all over. She says they hurt so I think they may itch. But no other symptoms that I am aware of at this stage

Mel Collins
Erin Semark it’s how my daughter started (she’s now 10) she started at 18 months old with acute urticaria resulting in anaphylaxis, then went into have high fevers, joint swelling, swollen lymph nodes plus other stuff at every flare up, we found out she has an undiagnosed systematic autoinflammatory disorder… early on she couldn’t tell us her symptoms, is she under immunology?

Cu-tay Baskin
I get them from the cold, started when I was 16 and never went away

Jennifer Mignanelli Halahurich
My dr mentioned it as a cause for me, I don’t think the cold causes them, but if I put a cold compress on my hives and swelling they actually get worse.

Jolene Goetz
I get my hives from cold too. Even if it’s just a slightly breeze. I get them for other things too though. I’ve had them over 20 years.

Azalea Ingalls
Both my kids did and both outgrew it within about 4-5 years.

Louise Harwood
I get them from the cold, from the heat, from food. from clothes rubbing against my skin and the list goes on. No rhyme or reason. The only thing that keeps me some what sane is that I am not dying of some horrific disease. I know this sounds horrible but some days I do have to remind myself of this. Stay safe and I hope you have a good Memorial Day.
