This is the last picture I took of my hives. I was covered from my scalp to the bottom of my feet. AND I WAS FED UP!

When the hives first appeared, I went to see my allergist since hives are typically an allergic reaction. She told me I didn’t have any allergies and told me to take Allegra, Zyrtec AND Benadryl each day. Well, this made my fatigue worse and of course did not help the hives.

I went to my family doctor who told me to continue taking the other meds and added 2 prescriptions for migraines. I continued to break out so the doctor did prescribe Prednisone over the phone. The steriod gave me temporary relief but soon was breaking out again.

I was getting pretty fed up because the doctors were pushing more and more medicines to cover up the problem rather than getting to the bottom of the problem. So I called a different doctor and at the first visit, blood work was ordered for the first time. I was also told to stop taking all medications.

Without any improvement another round of Prednisone was prescribed. I ended up in the ER soon thereafter with upper abdominal pain which spread to my back. I was concerned about a possible heart attack which was ruled out (Thank God!) but was apparently having a reaction to the steroids. While in the ER, my entire face swelled to which the doctor acknowledged with a “Hmmm” and sent me home without doing anything.

After an abdominal sonogram and a few more blood test, I was sent to a dermatologist for a biopsy of the hives because the doctor was out of ideas. The dermatologist felt biopsies cost too much so instead prescribed 2 more meds.

Outside of all this, I had some blood work done by my chiropractor to check for food intolerance. I discovered there are 22 foods my body does not tolerate well which includes gluten, wheat, rye, bananas, eggs, and milk to name a few.

These are food intolerances not full allergic reactions that an allergist would test for. Eliminating these foods from my diet has also removed the hives…unless I slip up on my food.

I was so tired of doctors covering up the symptoms and kept looking for ways to figure out what was really going on. Leaky gut is a real problem for many and for me it was causing a horrible hives breakout.

My birthday was on the 16th and having the hives go away was the best present I could have received. I did slip up and have one donut early this week which caused my ankles to break out so I’m pretty certain that grains caused the problem.

Don’t give up on your search for the cause and don’t be afraid to search out a doctor or holistic professional that will help you.

JENNIFER QUINN If an allergist checks for food allergies will an intolerance show up? I guess what I’m asking is, is it the same test or do you have to go to a different doctor for it?

ELLEN KAY KIRCHDOERFER It is a different test. I went thru a full allergy test a year ago with no allergies. These intolerance were discovered from a blood test sent to a special lab for analysis.

RHEANE POMERLEAU Thanks as i got an allergy test in Jan and nothing came up. Seeing him again tomorrow so will ask for this asap. So happy for you

MARY WU I just went to do allergy test and found out I have food allergies and also environmental allergies like very allergic to dust. So you changed your diet and the hives just all went away?

ELLEN KAY KIRCHDOERFER I removed a whole list of foods I was intolerant of. Gluten and grains can be toxic to our bodies. The article Jim Williford Jr. shared is a very good description of the health problem I have.

SUE JOAN PERFETTO Thank you so much for sharing. I have also been through 5 different doctors and 9 different drugs. When I asked about blood tests they all did the same ones! The dermatologist did the biopsies I have the scares to prove it. I am going to make an appointment with my doctor and for the food intolerance test. Thank you so much for sharing.

TARNZ WEBB Thank you for your post Ellen this is the exact journey I am about to commence. Just curious to know, (with an open mind to everyone’s experience is different of course) how long did it take for your gut health diet to kick in? When did your hives start to go away?

LYNN LUCAS GOULD I can’t speak for Ellen, but I started working on my gut health 3 months ago, and have been having incredible success. My hives are not totally gone yet, but my bad flare ups are getting to be few and far between. It is a strict regiment to follow, but so worth it. Also, as Jim mentioned above, if I “treat” myself once in a while, I’m not getting the nasty hive reactions I’d get in the past. Good luck!

ELLEN KAY KIRCHDOERFER I started a gut repair mix at the same time I started eliminating foods. I started seeing a difference the first week and most hives were gone after two weeks. I do have flair ups if I make a mistake on my diet. I woke yesterday with spots on my forehead again. But I know what caused it and I will do my best to avoid it in the future. If you want to chat, send me a PM. I’m happy to share everything that worked for me
