Hives – Success Story

I got a flu shot

Long Post – Success Story – for now…
I’ve been waiting for quite some time to share because I keep thinking the hives will be back. That said, it’s been a few months now and I’ve been pretty much hive free. Every so often (maybe once a week) I’ll have a few show up, but they aren’t itchy and they disappear quickly. This is a big change from a year ago.
Last September, I got a flu shot, as I have always done. Two days later my body was covered in hives. After a week of no relief, I saw an allergist who put me on a variety of medications. Over a four month period, I was able to reduce them and get by on 1/2 Zyrtec per day. Similar to many who suffer from this, I didn’t like taking or want to take the medication because it changed the way I felt. I saw so many doctors. I had every test done and the answer was no known cause – idiopathic (my least favorite word). I started doing research, tried supplements and made changes to my diet. I used this site for reference, tried alternative medical providers, and did my own research. Finally, in January, I stopped all medication. The first week was horrific – worse than the initial outbreak, but then, slowly but surely, things started getting better. The only interventions that I’m currently using are the ones that I think make a difference – even though I have no proof they are actually working. I limit dairy, sugar, and gluten; I exercise regularly – for some reason, when I exercise, if I have hives, they disappear; I take a lot of vitamin C; I eat apples, grapes, cherries, berries, and other foods with quercetin every day.
I believe that the medicines were working against me. Obviously I have no idea how long this remission will last, but I feel good for now and the new habits I’ve developed haven’t been to hard to maintain. I don’t understand this crazy condition any more than I did a year ago, so I can’t suggest that anyone try what worked for me. I’m just sharing my story.
I just don’t know what to do about a flu shot this year. It’s the only link I can come up with; however, correlation doesn’t equal causation.

Thanks for sharing. I eat a lot of foods with quercetin. I thought it was just me but they make a difference for me.

Lori Sasson
Tamora – I load up on these foods and yes – I think it helps. Ironically, quercetin in supplement form didn’t have the same outcome.

Tamora Williams
Lori Sasson I wondered about that. I do the same thing as you. I need to exercise daily verses every other and and in vitamin C. I have been concerned to add hardly anything because you never know. What do you do for protein? I cut out too much in the beginning and lost too much weight.

Lori Sasson
Tamora – I follow a vegetarian diet, so eat all plant based proteins like beans, nuts, lentils, and tofu.

Teri Shelangoski Felix
Tamora Williams what foods have quercetin?

Lori Sasson
Teri Shelangoski Felix See list in photo for some foods with high levels of quercetin.

Teri Shelangoski Felix
Lori Sasson this is confusing. High histamine foods are on this list.

Lori Sasson
Teri Shelangoski Felix – Indeed – that said, for me, I didn’t notice a difference following an extremely low histamine diet. I did notice a difference when increasing quercetin levels in food. I imagine that for each person the outcome is different.

Tamora Williams
Teri Shelangoski Felix I eat mainly onions, broccoli, apples more than one, cherries, blueberries, blackberries, grapes. Those are my go to foods!!!

Yeah. Tried supplements but did not help much. I’m on turmeric paste now. Only three weeks and hives/joints pain free. I think, our body just needs a boost n not medicines…well, some of us because we are different with different triggers.

Lori Sasson
Alicia, Is turmeric paste something you make or you do you buy it in paste form?

Alicia Deedee
Lori Sasson I do make it myself but you can find some made already in stores.

Lizanne McAdams-Graham
Alicia Deedee can you tell us what turmeric paste is exactly.

Alicia Deedee
Karen Streator Smith this is the one im using

Alicia Deedee
Lizanne McAdams-Graham turmeric, coconut or olive oil, black pepper. You can read more in the article.

Alicia Deedee
There is turmeric support group. Let me know if you would like to join, I will post a link here.

Lizanne McAdams-Graham
Alicia Deedee thank you so much

Don’t get it this year!
My son developed hives after his MMR booster

Lori Sasson
Lucy – I’m so conflicted. I’ve gotten it for so many years without any trouble. I know that hives can be a side effect though.

Lucy Knowles
Lori Sasson I just don’t feel it’s worth that side effect.. unless you have other severe medical conditions like asthma and lung issues etc.
The flu vaccines are made prior to the upcoming year and it never matches and therefore doesn’t really work
I have not had a flu shot in 25 years

Karen Streator Smith
this would not be possible for me as it is required by my employer.

Lori Sasson
Karen Streator Smith I too work in an environment that requires it. However, there are acceptable reasons to opt out.

Lori Sasson
Karen Streator Smith So true!

Lucy Knowles
Lori Sasson yes this is one of them.
My employer just sent a letter out about exemptions

Sara Sherrill Copeland
My theory is that for different reasons, our (most/some/ all 🤷🏻‍♀️) bodies are overloaded with inflammation. When we take steps to reduce inflammation, then the hives settle down and start to go away. I have been doing different diets, exercise, supplements, etc. I’m finally at a point, like you, where this is manageable. Btw, all those things you mentioned lower inflammation in the body ☺️

Sara Sherrill Copeland
Also, maybe your body had an inflammatory response to the flu shot?? is that possible?

Lori Sasson
Sara Sherrill Copeland That is what I have been thinking. But it’s of course not possible to know for sure.

Sara Sherrill Copeland
Lori Sasson I know!! I wish I had bloodwork for inflammatory markers from the beginning to compare with now… if only I had known

Lori Sasson
Exactly, but how could anyone have known?

Nikki Pont
Many people are allergic to the preservatives they use in vaccines. You can now ask for a preservative free flu vaccine as I do.

Lori Sasson
Nikki Pont I’m not convinced that it was specifically the vaccine. I have had this vaccine and many others without incident. Extensive allergy testing has shown that I’m not allergic to anything – food, medication, environmental, etc. But, like Sara Sherrill Copeland said above, if the conditions in our body aren’t right, things can get out of whack. I’m suspecting that this is what happened in my case. I believe that all of the work I have done this year has in some way reset my system.

Nikki Pont
Lori Sasson I have bone marrow cancer, mastocytosis, aquagenic pruritus, chronic urticaria and prurigo nodularis. Think my body is a tad out of whack!

Lori Sasson
Nikki Pont It sounds like you are dealing with a lot, significantly more than me, for sure. I hope that you are able to find some things that offer you relief.

Nikki Pont
Lori Sasson That’s very kind of you! It hasn’t been easy and to add itching makes it worse!

Tamora Williams
Nikki Pont prayers for you!!!

Lori Sasson
Nikki Pont itching can be so frustrating and unbearable.

Nikki Pont
Lori Sasson And wishing you well also
