Hives can be caused by several things, including allergies, stress and infections. While hives are not usually serious, they can be uncomfortable and maybe dangerous if the person is having difficulty breathing.
How to Prevent Hives?
To prevent hives, you should avoid allergens that cause them. For example, if you know that certain foods trigger an allergic reaction in your body, you should avoid those foods or make sure to take an antihistamine before eating them.
You should also try to manage stress as much as possible since it can also cause hives. This can be done by exercising regularly or using breathing techniques such as yoga or meditation.
In addition to avoiding allergens and managing stress, there are some other things you can do to prevent hives:
- Wear loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibres such as cotton instead of wool or polyester because these materials tend to irritate the skin more than others do.
- Take warm baths or showers instead of taking cold ones because cold water can also irritate the skin which may lead to hives developing in that area of your body.
- Avoiding Allergens, If you have an allergy, it makes sense to avoid any foods that might trigger a reaction.
- Treating Infections, If you have been diagnosed with an infection such as strep throat or mononucleosis, treating it as soon as possible will help reduce your chances of developing hives.
- Stay away from bees, Stinging insects such as bees can cause an allergic reaction that leads to hives. Avoid areas where bees are common and wear protective clothing if you’re exposed to them often.
- Don’t scratch, If you have hives, don’t scratch your skin because this can lead to infection or scarring of the skin.
- Stay cool and hydrated. Heat and sweating can make hives worse. If you’re having an episode of hives, stay cool by staying in an air-conditioned room and drinking lots of water.
- Take an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton) or cetirizine (Zyrtec). These drugs block the release of histamine from mast cells in your body and reduce inflammation
- Take medicine as prescribed. If your doctor has prescribed medicine for your hives, take it exactly as directed on the package label or prescription label.
