What Food Do Allergies Cause Hives?

Your jelly beans aren’t giving you hives. Why you might ask? What food do allergies cause hives? This depends on the person and what they are allergic to. Some common foods that cause hives include nuts, shellfish, and eggs. While everyone is different, if you have a mild allergy to these foods (or any other food) it’s possible that they may cause hives in some people.

As the title of this post implies, I’ll go over some of the major food allergies that cause hives. I’m going to expand on common food allergies that cause hives and any triggers.

What Food do Allergies Cause Hives?

Hives are small bumps that appear on the skin. They’re usually red and itchy, but they can also be white or clear.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hives are more common in children than adults. The NIH estimates that about 5% of children have them at some point during their lives. In most cases, people who get hives will never have them again.

Hives are caused by something called an allergic reaction. An allergic reaction happens when your body thinks something is harmful, even though it’s not. When this happens, your body makes a special protein called IgE. This protein attaches itself to the cells in your body and causes them to release chemicals that make you itch, swell up, and have hives.

Food allergies are one of the most common causes of hives.

The foremost common foods that cause hives in you include:

  • Eggs,
  • Peanuts,
  • Shellfish (like shrimp),
  • Soy,
  • Fish/shellfish mix (like tuna),
  • Tree nuts (like walnuts),
  • Wheat/gluten products (like bread).
