There are two main types of hives:
Acute hives generally last for less than six weeks and are often caused by an allergy or infection.
Chronic hives tend to last longer than six weeks and can be caused by various factors including autoimmune diseases like lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus), dermatomyositis (a type of inflammatory muscle disease), vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels) and others.
